Xigou is a useful umbrella for Chinese dogs selected to hunt by sight and speed. Regional populations—not a single globally recognised standard—are the more honest unit of description.
Modern conservation and show systems are beginning to formalise some of these populations. That work helps record type, but it can also compress the variation that made a landrace functional. This guide therefore records both standard descriptions and regional ambiguity.

Regional profile
The Shaanxi hound.
The Shaanxi type is a tall, light-framed coursing hound associated with the open Guanzhong landscape and usually described with feathering at the ears and tail.
Commonly reproduced CKU-derived measurements place males around 68–78 cm and females around 60–72 cm at the shoulder, with weights around 20–30 kg. Colours include black, white, red, fawn and grey-blue. A convex nasal bridge is often celebrated as characteristic, but preferences inside China are not perfectly uniform.
Temperament descriptions converge on independence, reserve with strangers, close family bonding, high prey drive and territorial alertness. These are working-dog generalisations, not guarantees about an individual animal.

Disambiguation
Shaanxi is not Shanxi.
Shaanxi (陕西) and Shanxi (山西) are neighbouring but different provinces. The feathered coursing hound described here is associated with Shaanxi. “Shanxi Xigou” is widespread in English-language breed pages and DNA databases, so this site records it as a search alias while correcting the geography.
How to pronounce Xigou
Xì gǒu is roughly “shee goh” to an English ear, with a falling fourth tone on xì and a dipping third tone on gǒu. “See-gow” is a common but misleading approximation.
